Siblings: The Block-In

Siblings, Block-In

Originally thinking I would do a grisaille (tonal) under painting, I decided I needed to do a detailed drawing since I was getting my reference material from so many different photos.  So instead of a 'shape' painting, the basis came from a 'line' drawing.  However, since I don't like having to fill up a white canvas, I toned the canvas with Transparent Red Oxide (Old Holland).  Then I blocked in the drawn elements using generalized color.   I also noticed that everything was square... the paintings, the rooms and the doorways.  I thought it would be much more interesting to make arched doorways, so found some architectural doorway references.  I am very happy with that change from the original drawing.  But, I wasn't pleased with the floor space...  too empty looking.  My references were a hardwood floor, but I wasn't sure that would work for this painting.
